What is ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)?

ATP is the energy "currency" that fuels activity. Without ATP your muscles would not function. This all-important molecule is always working behind the scenes to keep you moving and to power your muscles.

If a cell needs to have a reaction take place but they do not have enough energy, an activated carrier is used. ATP is the activated carrier.

Since ATP is important to the cell, we are interested to know its essential roles:

1. ATP is the major energy currency of the cell. It provides cells with the energy for the energy-consuming activities.

2. There are many monomers used in the synthesis of RNA and DNA. ATP is one of them.

3. It regulates many biochemical pathways in our bodies.

It also functions outside of cells in mammals. Its release from damaged cells can elicit pain, and its release from the stretched wall of the urinary bladder signals when the bladder needs emptying.

Without adequate ATP stores, we could not walk, run, breathe, or even have blood flow through our bodies. ATP is considered the "energy currency" of the cell. It is the molecule that gives us life.
